After a tight opening to the match that included some strong defensive play from Pararoos skipper David Barber and goalkeeper Christopher Pyne, Ukraine made the breakthrough midway through the first half.

The Pararoos threated the Ukraine goal with dangerous set pieces from Ben Roche and Brad Scott in the first half, however the defending world champions managed to add two further goals to their tally prior to the break.

Australia started the second stanza strongly with some impressive work from Roche, Scott, and Matthew Hearne, however Ukraine's quality ultimately told as the eastern European nation displayed some clinical finishing to add to their score.

Pararoos coach Kai Lammert was able to introduce a number of young players in the match, with Augustine Murphy, Cosimo Cirillo and Alessandro La Verghetta receiving valuable match minutes in the tournament.

Despite the opening game defeat, Lammert was proud of his team's application and effort against the world's best CP football nation.

"I was happy with the overall performance," Lammert said.

"The Ukrainian team are current world champions and are a very professional team, but we made them work hard for every goal."

"Our organisation, in particular in the first half, was very good.

"Communication was excellent, and we looked ok in transition."

Lammert's squad will take on Argentina, who defeated hosts Spain in their opener 7-nil, in their second match of the tournament.
