Zac James Blacka, 19, and Alex Townend, 22, both of Nowra, did not apply for bail which was formally refused by Magistrate Gabriel Fleming in court on Monday, July 1.
Blacka hasn't entered a plea to wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, while Townend has pleaded not guilty to charges of affray and armed with intent to commit an indictable offence.
Police said a 42-year-old man was assaulted outside his home by a group of men armed with an axe around 3am on June 30.
The man was heard shouting for help at the rear of his premises and was joined by his son, a 19-year-old man, who was armed with a tomahawk.
Following a wrestle, police allege the 19-year-old man had his tomahawk taken from him and was assaulted by the group of men, alleged to include Blacka and Townend, suffering lacerations to his face and the back of his head.
Police said he retreated to a friend's home, calling the ambulance for his father.
The 42-year-old man was taken to Wollongong Hospital for surgery with multiple facial fractures and lacerations to the head and hand.
He is reported to be in a serious but stable condition.
Police attended the scene and arrested Townend shortly after.
Police said Blacka handed himself into Nowra Police Station around 5pm Sunday.
Magistrate Fleming remanded both in custody, Townend to reappear on August 12 and Blacka on August 28.
