The NSW SES Volunteers Association provided the training as part of its ongoing mental health strategy.
Mental health trainer Selina Thomas said 20 volunteers participated in the two-day course and received an accredited Mental Health First Aid qualification.
Vice president Shannon Crofton said the organisation was proud to have made the training available to South Coast members.
"Volunteers are involved in a lot of incidents where they see confronting scenes," Mr Crofton said.
Mr Crofton said the volunteer association's biggest focus was to look after members and help them build resilience.
"[We ensure SES members] continue to be prepared to look after the South Coast community," he said.
Organisation president Kim Davis said volunteers regularly respond to flood and storm emergencies, road crashes, vertical rescues and searches. Ms Davis said she was proud of volunteers who came across confronting scenes.
The SES Volunteers Association provides support and welfare to volunteers including a Return To Work Program for injured volunteers and training to diffuse aggressive behaviour towards first responders.
The organisation aims to deliver the mental health training program to all 230 SES zones in NSW.
