Despite the Waratah League match being played at the Tigers Den, it was the visitors that jumped out of the gun, racing out to a 26-11 lead after one quarter.
The second quarter wasn't any better for the Cubs, who went into half-time down by 19 points (40-21).
A half-time rev up by coach Scott Balsar obviously worked, as the black and golds went on a run in the third quarter, to trail by 13 points heading into the final term.
A Kyle Leslie basket in the first minute of the fourth quarter closed the margin to 11, but that was as close as the Cubs got, as the Hornets held their nerves and ran out winners 84-55.
In the loss, which sees the Cubs drop to 6-8 on the season, Leslie top scored with 19 point, while skipper Riley O'Shannessy chipped in with 10.
Next up for Balsar's Cubs is another match at the Den this Saturday, when they battle the Blacktown Storm, who sit one spot ahead of them on the ladder, from 4pm.
