In pumping waves (1.2 - 1.8 metre) waves, Mikey and Owen were both eliminated in the round of 32.

Older brother Owen was the first to fall, going down to 11-time world champion Kelly Slater in the third round.

Wright's two-wave score of 8.30 (5.33 and 2.97) was no match for Slater, who totalled 12.50.

Three heats later, Mikey suffered the same fate, going down to countrymen Adrian Buchan.

Wright could only manage 6.50 (5.00 and 1.50) compared to Buchan's 8.73.

These two eliminations culminated with only three of the world's top 10 surfers reaching the quarter-final stage of the competition.

When surfing resumes, the quarter-final match-ups are; Brazil's Michael Rodrigues verses Australia's Wade Carmichael, France's Jeremy Flores up against United States' Kolohe Andino, Brazil's Filipe Toledo will take on US' Slater and Australia's Buchan battles Japan's Janoa Igarshi.

In better news for South Coast surfers, Gerroa's Sally Fitzgibbons is still alive in the women's draw, where she will go head-to-head with Brazil's Silvana Lima in the second quarter-final.

The other three quarter-finals in the women's draw are; Hawaii's Carissa Moore and Brisa Hennessy, Australia's Stephanie Gilmore and Courtney Conologue and Australia's Bronte Macaulay and Australia's Nikki Van Dijk.
