According to the committee, Australian research has found that one in four children are exposed to domestic violence and women who were exposed to domestic violence as children were more than twice as likely to be subjected to partner violence themselves.
Gender inequality is cited as a key determinant or factor that underpins violence against women and therefore the Nowra DV Committee recognises the importance of educating children and young people about gender equality and respectful relationships.
