Steve Matthews has had a long-standing connection with the Homicide Victims Support Group in Australia, which introduced him to the families of victims of domestic abuse.
After talking to a psychologist friend, he learnt there was more to abuse than black eyes and broken bones Many victims suffer silently and the more people Steve spoke to, the more he came to understand just how common domestic abuse is.
Horrified by his findings he felt compelled to write a story that showed the reality of the subject. The Skinny Girl not only lets readers walk a mile in the main character's shoes, it also adds to the current conversation about women's empowerment.
Shy, petite Daisy Croucher lives in other people's shadows and is practically invisible, even in her own family. She is surprised and flattered when popular pub local Jeff Singleton looks her way. While the story involves a range of abusive situations, it also delivers hope.

Domestic violence occurs across all ages, socioeconomic and demographic groups but mainly affects women and children. Sadly, each week a woman dies at the hands of her partner.
Royalties from sales of The Skinny Girl will be donated to the Homicide Victims Support Group and other organisations involved in similar work.
These organisations provide a range of support services to victims of domestic violence and offer a lifeline for those hoping to escape from their situation and enjoy a better life.
Steve encourages everyone to come along to his talk at Nowra Library on Wednesday, April 24 at 5.30pm.
"It is an important book - it is full of red flags and we hope those who see themselves in the story, the victims and perpetrators, will think about making changes in their lives," he said.
Steve's books will be for sale on the night at $30 each. To book, visit shoalhavenlibraries.com.au or phone 4429 3705.
