The Shoalhaven Arts Board have just announced an exciting new opportunity - Arts Practitioners Professional Development Grants. Up to $3000 is available for activities that support individual artists or arts workers (in the fields of visual, literary, musical and theatrical arts) to develop and enhance their skill set, connect with peers and build sustainable careers. These could include residencies, research trips, masterclasses, or travel to assist with skills development. You can find out more at shoalhaven.nsw.gov.au/My-Community/Arts
If you'd rather the chance to exhibit your work in the gallery, entries are now open for Now Contemporary Art Prize 2019 and the Mental Health Fellowship open art competition. Now Contemporary is the largest prize on the South Coast, with a first prize is of $10,000. Works can be 2D or 3D and in any medium, and the prize will be judged by a panel of arts professionals, headed by Ron Ramsey. Ron is the current executive director of the Art Gallery Society of NSW, former director of Newcastle Regional Gallery and has worked at both NGV and NGA as well as being Australia's Cultural Attaché at the Embassy in Washington and will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the judging. For more information head to www.nowartprize.com.
The Mental Health Fellowship prize aims to reduce prejudice, discrimination and stigma in the community. Works can be in any media and need to respond to the theme Vital Connections - the importance of others, such as family, friends and pets in life and recovery. It's open to all who live in the Shoalhaven, Kiama, Southern Highlands or Eurobadalla areas regardless of age or ability.

You can find out more about all of these opportunities at the gallery, and while you're there check out two fabulous exhibitions. Travelling from the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, Starstruck: On Location tells the story of Australian cinema through the faces of actors from the early 20th century through to today. Working on film sets, photographers capture both the actors at work and the characters they are playing. Drawn predominantly from the National Film and Sound Archives' superb collection, the show features imagery of beloved Australian actors and iconic films.
Acclaimed artist Catherine O'Donnell brings her incredible, precise architectural drawings to the gallery, including the fantastic large-scale installation Fibro Facade. Comprising of 11 meticulous perspective drawings of windows and doors placed inside an architectural tape outline, O'Donnell has created a nostalgic facsimile of a fibro house on the gallery walls - you won't believe this is a flat artwork.
Don't miss your opportunity to learn from Catherine in a drawing workshop on Saturday, May 4. Working from a studio still life, you'll be guided in drawing processes such as observation and linear perspective and, using pencils and charcoal, learn how to develop your work into a resolved tonal drawing. Bookings are now open at SouthCoastTickets.com.au but get in quick as places are limited.
If you saw Guy Warren's exhibition River, Rainforest, Rock at the gallery earlier this year you may remember the stunning nine-part watercolour 'Big River.' Shoalhaven City Council would like to buy this work for the Gallery collection, ensuring it stays accessible to the public and remains together as a single body of work. Guy has agreed to donate three of the panels to the collection, but they need your help to purchase the remaining six, bringing Big River home to the place that inspired it. Donations are greatly appreciated at https://www.givenow.com.au/bigriver.
