The South Coast Register revealed personnel had been banned from marching in this year's ceremony due to safety concerns, in particular personnel marching in the dark.

The decision has been widely condemned on the South Coast Register's Facebook page.

It is understood Defence and the Commanding Officer of HMAS Albatross Captain Fiona Sneath will meet with RSL representatives on Friday.

Defence and the Royal Australian Navy has come under harsh criticism since the story, which has travelled far and wide, broke earlier on Wednesday.

In six hours since the story was published on the Register website and Facebook page, there has more than 10,000 engagements, 133 comments and the story has been shared more than 560 times.

In a statement from defence, Captain Sneath said HMAS Albatross was already providing a guest speaker, catafalque party and flag bearers for the Greenwell Point Dawn Service.

"The decision not to march in darkness before the dawn service was made on safety grounds however noting local community concerns and the commitment of navy to this service HMAS Albatross will work with local organisers to find a solution to the issue," Captain Sneath said.

"Navy has always been involved in Anzac Day marches in the Shoalhaven region and is committed to supporting this Anzac Day tradition."
