The West Nowra resident took the plunge and braved the clippers to help raise funds for the Cancer Council's Shave for a Cure.
With a hopeful target of $500, Marie was overwhelmed as her fundraising efforts soared towards $600.
She also received a last minute donation from a customer who overheard her story just moments before she had her hair shaved at Urban Hair in Bomaderry on Tuesday.
Marie lost her close friend Joy Ellis to cancer 20 months ago.
"We were best friends for 38 years. It's left a huge hole in my life," she said.
After enduring bouts of cancer herself, Marie was left unable to donate blood while she was recovering, and found herself at a loss on how to help others. She also had to sit out Relay for Life after being bound to a walking frame.
Her fundraising efforts have filled the void.
"My sister-in-law had breast cancer and my father-in-law died of stomach and liver cancer," she said.
"Everyone you know has been touched by cancer somehow so it's so important that we raise money for research and helping people who are going through treatment."
Marie thanked everyone who donated, including those from England, Queensland and friends in Tasmania.
She also thanked her hairdresser Kylie for donating her time to the cause and encouraged anyone thinking of doing similar, to contact Kylie at Urban Hair on 4421 0007.
