SA were dismissed for just 260 under sunny skies at Karen Rolton Oval as the Vics engaged in something of a bowl-off, as they seek to settle on a preferred XI for next week's final at Junction Oval.
Victoria ended the day at 1/28 against the winless Redbacks in a match that is inconsequential to the final Shield standings.
The Vics, however, suffered a blow with Nic Maddinson in serious danger of missing the final after the in-form batsman suffered a thumb injury attempting to take a catch.
Victoria took the unusual step of lining up with four paceman, plus a spinner in Jon Holland, with Andrew Fekete and the team's leading wicket-taker Scott Boland rotated out of the side.
James Pattinson and Peter Siddle showed all their quality by following up their wicket-taking in last week's crucial win over New South Wales with several top-order scalps.
Pattinson took 3/52, while Siddle returned 2/15 from 11 frugal overs.
Tremain ran through the lower-order to return figures of 3/38.
Redbacks captain Travis Head top-scored with 67, but it took a handy 59 from inexperienced spinner Tom Andrews to help South Australia reach a position of respectability after being 6/140.
The home side ended the day positively by dismissing Test opener Marcus Harris right on stumps for 16, off the bowling of Nick Winter.
