In just a few days we were able to raise $1300.
Thanks to the Bay and Basin community for once again being so supportive.
Supporters of this worthy cause, including some of the medical research team, are having a fundraising bike ride from Wollongong to the Hunter Valley where they hope to raise much needed funds for this area of research. Lions Clubs are the largest group of service clubs in the world.
Why not think about joining us for our next community event?

Pollies need manners
Most politicians I can just tolerate but many have a habit which drives me crazy.
This is the tendency to approach a group of voters or media people with their hands in their pockets. I find this to be insulting and disrespectful of those they expect to vote for them.
Even on Christmas Island, Scott Morrison was guilty of this and to be clear I do not differentiate between political parties with this observation.
Perhaps because female politicians usually do not wear similar type trousers they seem free of this complaint but one would hope their backroom supporters might find enough courage (or manners) to remind them of this disrespect.
In earlier times it was customary to remove a hat when entering a room but the penchant for the Barnaby Joyce style of headwear is also the loss of another rung in the ladder of public respect.

Urgent action needed
Directly behind Berry Bowling Club, in full view of the patrons, runs Broughton Mill Creek. For the past month (or maybe longer) the surface of the creek (from bank to bank) has been covered with weed; sucking oxygen from the water.
The creek as long as I can remember has been home to families (collective noun: paddles) of platypus.
One family lives under the stone bridge on the approach to town.
Last Saturday, I noticed, through a lack of oxygen the weed is starting to turn brown - eventually the weed will decompose into slime and a toxic bloom.
Why hasn’t anything been done?
The army of ducks that parade back and forth along the banks have vacated the scene.
Something needs to be done and done quickly.

When is enough enough?
I read with concern of the issues faced by professional medical staff and obviously the patients caught in the middle, obviously because funding and political commitment is lacking.
I recall some $80 million was taken out of the medical budgets some time ago.
Our population is increasing too quickly, and in Milton and Ulladulla region mothers have to give birth at Nowra or Wollongong.
The constant winding down of so many important medical services residents should have has now gone too far.
Medical professionals and the public should not have to continually fight to get first world facilities, equipment and funding. Just like our local roads that have been allowed to deteriorate to a dangerous state, risking lives.
Ports, poles and wires and the environment have all been sold out in one way or another to boost government coffers and real quality of life is starting to stand out as a serious issue now and for the future of all of us.
