Shoalhaven Ex-Servicemen Men
Wednesday 6th March we were using both Greens. The speed of both was slow. A strong Westerly wind with a light shower made accurate bowling difficult. Rink 2 witnessed the game of the week. Terry Wright, Gary Thurston and John Edwards were all over the Jack from the start. Up 7/1 they let their concentration lag and Steve Hollington, Ian Abberley and Harry Pearce made full use of this opportunity and score a terrific two followed by a fabulous three to close the gap to 1 shot. Terry, Gary and John shook off the lethargy and came back with superb bowling to extend the lead to 12 shots to 6 after the 11 end. Not to be outdone, Steve, Ian and Harry dug deeply and clawed their way back, 2 shots at a time, until they evened the score at 15 all after the 19th end and went into the lead on the penultimate end by a shot. Could they keep this run flowing or would Terry, Gary and John find their way back to win an end? After nearly letting an outstanding start crumble, Terry Wright, Gary Thurston and John Edwards won the last end by 2 shots to finally win the game 17 shots to 16. Well done to all bowlers. Rink 3 was a killer. Greg Morphett, Paul Takac and Neil Miller played magnificent bowls to crush their opposition by 28 to 11 shots. Rink 4 In the first Pairs game, Paul Goddard and Jim Jameison played superb bowls to overwhelm their opponents by 26 shots to 14. Rink 9 Michael Edwards and Alessandro Lattanzio played outstanding bowls to win by a large margin. Rink 10 saw a very tough struggle with Matthew Goddard and Graham Eyre playing marvellous bowls to just prevail by 24 shots to 22. Rink 11 watched Max Stevens and Peter Smith playing some brilliant bowls to win the battle by 20 to 14 shots. Culburra Women
Last week proved to be a very busy but successful week for our Club. The Final of our Major Pairs was played and, once again, our ladies put on a wonderful display of quality bowls. The score card was close most of the way, with team Eileen Hunter and Jenny Castellan getting a fairly good lead towards the second half of the game. Lorraine Foster and Marilyn O’Day showed great concentration and determination and closed the margin. Eileen and Jenny went on to win the Championship by one shot on the last end. Congratulations ladies on a great game, and well done to Eileen Hunter who is now a Major in our Club.
The District Senior and Open Fours were played last week also, and once again our Club was well represented. Of the three teams competing in the Opens, teams Ruby Salmon, Marilyn O’Day, Trish Bailey and Helen Neilsen met team Sandra Annetts, Carol Turton, Gail Scott and Nancye Carre in the semi final. Sandra, Carol, Gail and Nancye went on to Final, were they came runners up overall. In the Senior Fours, team Eileen Hunter, Judy Watson, June Jones and Jenny Castellan also made it to the Final, and were also runners up. Great work ladies – a Culburra team in both finals is a terrific effort.
Our Social numbers were down a bit, with so many of our ladies competing and supporting our Club in their District event. Last Tuesday’s winners were Maree Guilfoyle, Margaret Gilchrist and Lorraine Epple over Edna Baxter, Trish Tom and Joy Hanneman. Thursdays winners were Narrelle Wetsteyn and Lorraine Epple over Trish Tom and Margaret Gilchrist, and Elaine Turner and Joy Hanneman over Ruby Salmon and Jean Eagleton.
