38 years later, the famous face still lives in Nowra and catches up with old team mates - and their coach - of a Friday.
"The team camaraderie, all the guys there were the best part of it," he said.
"I did drink Tooheys then - we used to mainly drink at the Archer, or the Bridge Hotel. Whoever was sponsoring the football club at the time."
He said there had been a few changes since 1981 - he's no longer taking to the football field of a weekend, but spending time with much-loved grandchildren.
"We do a lot of camping with the family and grandkids, golf and fishing," he said.
"I'm not as fit as I was, and I've moved onto XXXX, the Queensland beer."
He said Nowra had changed too.
"The town had expanded and developed. And you don't see as many people outdoors doing sport as much - too many mobile phones."
