The new course from Mental Health First Aid Australia aims to educate carers, support people and family members on the mental health needs of older people.
The two-day mental health first aid course covers things like how to recognise common mental health problems in older people including confusion and dementia, how to provide initial help using a practical action plan, how to locate professional help and how to respond in a crisis.
The course will be delivered, for the first time in the Shoalhaven, by Nowra based Master Mental Health First Aid instructor, Annette Tesoriero on Friday March 22 and Friday March 29 at the MIND the GaP Building on the Shoalhaven Campus UOW, West Nowra.
Concessions are available for students, volunteers and community carers
Statistics show strategies to address the specific mental health needs of older community members is needed.
During the past year, depression, anxiety and substance use problems affected 7.5 per cent of the population over the age of 65 while dementia affects 8.8 per cent of this age group.
Research has also shown that 52 per cent of permanent residents in aged-care had symptoms of depression.
