The cyclists are taking part in one of the popular Tour de Cure events, this one as part of the Westpac Tour 202.

The cyclists headed out from Wollongong on Sunday before travelling into the Shoalhaven, onto Huskisson back through Nowra and Kiama and onto Sydney.

On Monday the riders made an impressive site as they rode down Junction Street, Nowra pausing for a quick break outside the Nowra Westpac branch.

The riders then headed to Berry for lunch before finishing their day’s ride at Kiama.

They will complete their ride in Sydney on Tuesday.

The site of a peloton of riders in Nowra's main street brought back memories when the area hosted a leg finish and criterium of the popular Commonwealth Bank Cycle Classic for a number of years in the 1990s-2000s.

There are 233 people on this year's tour - 189 riders and 43 support crew.

Tour de Cure was born in 2007 when three mates – Geoff Coombes, Samantha Hollier-James and Gary Bertwistle – met up for a quiet coffee in Sydney.

They wanted to make a difference and decided to see what disease affected the most Australians.

With one in two men and women affected by cancer by the age of 85, they decided to focus their efforts on helping to find a cure for cancer.

Geoff had ridden more than 5800km across America and it had inspired him to use his passion for riding to drive change.

Gary was a former marathon runner who had just got into riding and knew all about endurance, while Samantha had lost her beloved nan to bowel cancer and didn't want anyone else to lose their loved ones to the disease.

Drawing on their professional backgrounds in events, marketing and sponsorship, they combined their skills and passion to create a life-changing bike ride in Australia and raise money for pioneering cancer research.

Since 2007, the event has raised more than $40 million, funded 322 cancer projects, achieving 24 significant cancer breakthroughs, and has helped to raise awareness about cancer prevention to more than 100,000 school children across Australia.

The Westpac Tour Started in March 2017, coinciding with Westpac’s 200th anniversary.

The Westpac Tour 200 and 201 has raised $2.1 million to date.

The 2017 ride aimed to raise $500,000 for cancer research, support and prevention.

The team left Sydney, headed to Bowral, onto Wollongong and back to finish in Sydney's CBD alongside the Westpac offices.

With the support of colleagues, family and friends, the tour exceeded expectations and raised over $1 million.

Backing up in March 2018, Westpac 201 saw the partnership between Westpac and Tour de Cure continue to grow, expanding to two three-day tours which raised vital funds to support those who have been affected by cancer, whether directly or indirectly.

This team did it again and even exceeded their previous goal by raising over $1.1 million.

So far in 2019 the event has raised more than $770,000.

The Tour de Cure’s Signature Tour for 2019 will be Beretts' [Mark Beretta] 10th anniversary ride from Sydney to Geelong.

To celebrate his milestone the tour will ride from Channel 7 Sunrise Brekkie Central to Beretts' home town of Geelong including a visit to Kiama, before heading inland to tackle the scenic and beautiful country towns from Canberra to Corryong, before experiencing Central Victoria.

The nine-day ride starts May 2, but it can be split into separate NSW and Victorian legs.
