On Tuesday, 5000 signatures on the petition for an overpass at the Jervis Bay Road and Princes Highway intersection have landed on South Coast MP Shelley Hancock's desk.
Mrs Hancock said the Roads and Maritime Services was working on the design of the intersection - it just needs funding.
She said she was "very optimistic" there would be a road safety funding announcement about the intersection prior to the state election.
"Nobody would disagree, whoever is in government after March has to fix it," she said.
"We’ve been reducing the speed and people have been supportive of that, but you can't keep on reducing the speed on the highway."
The industry of community group Vincentia Matters, which obtained signatures and handed them over, has not been lost on Mrs Hancock.
"It certainly strengthens the case," she said.
"If you don't have a community advocating for things like this, the work that needs to be done is often delayed.
"Some of the comments on the petition have been mind-blowing."

"Getting onto the highway is like playing Russian roulette with oncoming traffic and the banking up of traffic is getting crazy, forcing people to do stupid things."
Marc Korner, Erowal Bay
"This is long overdue, the band-aid fixes haven't worked. I also think the Island Point Road intersection could do with similar attention. Both locations are dangerous, it's just that the JB Road has a bigger and more immediate demand."
- Elissa Thomsen
"This intersection is lethal!!!"
- Kylie Wilson, Ulladulla
"Not only are local residents and tourists at risk, our local police, ambulance and fire brigade officers are having to deal with all the carnage that occurs on the Princes Highway, south of Nowra. Something has to be done for the safety of all."
- Kerryn White, Callala Bay
"In typical government fashion nothing will happen to clear this mess until some celebrity wannabe gets killed at this intersection, then watch how fast it gets upgraded."
- Kevin Lynch, Nowra
"Defence department needs to step in here. This has an effect not only on the local traffic, but causes a risk to national security as we have major defence establishments on both sides of the road requiring access."
- Craig Lewis
"We deserve safer roads in the Shoalhaven, enough death has occurred."
- Pippa Horton, Nowra
"I like 1km from this intersection. I have had many, many near misses from impatient drivers taking unnecessary risks to head north on the highway. I want to return to my family alive after work each day."
- Cindy-Lou McGillivray, Falls Creek
"The worst intersection south of Nowra. Too many people ignore, don't understand, or can't read the stop sign."
- Janice Standingford, Sydney
"We need an overpass. Huge growth in our area, keep up government."
- Sharne Nicholls, Erowal Bay
