A South Nowra man who drank 18 stubbies of beer in just under 12 hours returned a breath reading almost four times the legal limit, seven hours after his last drink.

David Malcolm Buckley, 40, who pleaded guilty to high-range drink driving, has escaped a jail term in Nowra Local Court.
Court papers said Buckley told officers who stopped him for a random breath test in Hillcrest Avenue, Nowra just after 10.30am on December 1 last year he had consumed 18 stubbies of beer between 4pm the previous evening and 3am.
Buckley was driving a Subaru Impreza WRX at the time and returned a positive breath test and later a breath reading of 0.195.
Magistrate Gabriel Fleming placed Buckley on a 12-month community corrections order, which allows him serve his sentence in the community. He was also fined $1500, disqualified from driving for eight months and must have an interlock device fitted to his car for two years. He must also perform 50 hours of community service.
