Emergency services received reports a home at The Park Drive, Sanctuary Point was well alight at 8.45am on Sunday, February 17. 

Shoalhaven RFS superintendent Mark Williams said six RFS appliances attended the home to try and extinguish the blaze. 

“Crews battled the blaze for a good hour-and-a-half, two hours before they got it under control,” he said. 

Superintendent Williams said the home was “totally lost” to the fire, and that crews had been at the scene on and off since the blaze was extinguished. 

“There’s a lot of rubble and it’s very difficult for our firefighters to access due to safety,” he said. 

Officer in charge of Nowra Police Station Inspector Ray Stynes said there were no suspicious circumstances around the blaze, and the two residents, believed to be in their 60s, were very lucky to escape with minor injuries. 

“They suffered minor smoke inhalation and were taken to Shoalhaven District Hospital by ambulance for treatment and as a precaution,” he said. 

Thankfully, the couple’s dog was located and removed from the home safely, after it was found hiding in one the rooms. 

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
