Conditions were excellent with about an eight-knot north-easterly increasing to over 12 knots during the race, and Michael, as usual, got his Finn to the lead in the first lap, followed by the Spirals of Wayne, Gordon, Steve, Cameron Phelps, Bill, then Alan’s Laser and Cameron Hertzberg’s Spiral 5.6.
With the outgoing tide the laps were completed quickly, and contests developed between Wayne and Gordon for second, and Steve, Cameron, Bill and Alan for fourth.
This pattern continued as the wind increased, although Bill and Cameron Phelps worked ahead of the mid fleet competition, and on the last lap Bill and Cameron also passed Gordon, with Bill nailing Wayne on the finish line by less than a metre to snatch second, and Cameron finished just ahead of fifth place Gordon by five seconds.
Steve Phelps came in next at sixth, with Alan seventh over the line, and Cameron Hertzberg behind him.
With the Point Score being decided on personal handicaps, Michael’s first over the line translated to sixth with Wayne fifth and Steve 20 seconds ahead of him for fourth while Alan, who was doubtless ruing his swim during the race, was 14 seconds ahead of Steve in third place, but just four seconds adrift of Bill in second.
Cameron Phelps easily took the win with a great performance in the conditions, although he has significantly reduced his handicap for the rest of the season.
This Saturday the club sails for the Bomaderry Bowling Club Point Score and Championship. Start around 14.15 and no long sail to get to the start line!
