Aletheia Casey’s portrait of niece Ella carefully cradling a chicken is one of 40 finalists in the running to be crowned winner of this year’s National Portrait Gallery’s National Photographic Portrait Prize 2019.
Out of a staggering 3,113 entries received, Aletheia’s image has made the final cut.
“This image is an exploration of childhood and the meaningful relationships we have as children with nature and animals,” Aletheia said.
“The photograph is part of a wider series that explores the complexity and duality of family, home and belonging, played out amongst the light and shadows which co-exist within life.”
Aletheia is currently based in the UK and will travel to Canberra on February 22 as the winner is announced.
The winning photographer will receive $30,000 in cash and $22,148 in photographic equipment
Shoalhaven residents are encouraged to vote for Aletheia’s portrait in the People’s Choice Award category. Voting can be done here from February 23 to March 24.
The photographer who receives the most People’s Choice votes will win a lighting kit valued at $7451 and voters will go into the draw to win an accommodation package at Crowne Plaza Canberra valued at $2000.
Winner or not, Aletheia’s photograph will be displayed along with the other 39 finalists in an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery from February 23 to April 7, with the show then touring to a number of interstate regional galleries
