January signed off with a searingly hot day on Thursday until a southerly buster sent the heat packing in the afternoon. The Bureau of Meteorology reckons it was the hottest January on record. While we have been spared the off-the-charts temperatures out west, the humidity and very warm nights made it very uncomfortable. While the southerly brought relief, it also caused damage, with the SES called out to deal with fallen trees and other wind damage.
The weather also kept the Rural Fire Service busy, trying to contain a blaze at Illaroo, west of Nowra. It had flared up in difficult terrain but some tactical backburning and help from firefighting aircraft prevented in getting out of hand.
The week brought political heat too. At the launch of the NRMA’s electric vehicle charging station in Berry retiring Gilmore MP Ann Sudmalis faced a barrage of questions about the intensifying fight for the electorate. saying she’d back any conservative candidate. She also took issue with the Prime Minister’s accusation dumped Liberal candidate turned independent Grant Schultz had tried to bully his way into the electorate.
It was Mrs Sudmalis’s second outing since returning from New York. She also fronted Shoalhaven City Council as a ratepayer, saying she and Joanna Gash had been environmentally stalked over tree vandalism near the Culburra Beach property they share.
Have a great week ahead.
