Vitiello has a long history in the speed skating sport and has found that cycling and speed skating complement each other well.
Vitiello trains for endurance and speed on the bike and technique on the skates.
After winning medals and championships at the NSW Speed Skating championships last November, Vitiello was sure of a position on the NSW team at the national championships.
These championships were held on a criterium circuit on the northern side of Brisbane that features 400m and 1200m circuits with a series of indoor events held in an auditorium nearby.
On the first day of competition Vitiello gained a silver medal in the masters 40-plus 3000m race and a bronze in the outdoor 100m sprint.
It took him three days to get gold when he won the 3000m indoor race and by the end of the week he had two gold, three silver and three bronze medals.
These medals came from the 3000m indoor (gold), 3000m relay (gold with NSW team), 1000m and 3000m road and 3000m road relay (all silvers) and the three bronze in the 100m road sprint, 400m road sprint a 500m indoor race.
In past speed skating events Vitiello has won NSW and Australian championships and Oceania championships.
Next Sunday an in-form Vitiello will return to criterium racing with the Nowra Velo Club.
