Current NVC members, new members and visitors were entered in four grades of racing over half an hour plus the extra count down laps with hard, fast racing, close sprint finishes and shattered fields.
The Illawarra Cycle Club’s Jordan Ross rode an attacking race in A grade and had the field spread around the 800m circuit as he rode to the win.
Over the final 10 minutes of racing Ross and his club mate, Simon Clark held a 300m lead over the chase bunch but Ross went ahead in the final lap to be well clear of Clark on the line.
Levi Johns skipped away from the chase to solo into third position. Peter Cooper (Illawarra CC) was fourth ahead of Cameron Judson (Sydney Uni Velo) and Aaron Coghlan.
Scott James in knocking hard on the A grade door following his win in the B grade event. This grade provided the biggest field of the program with 16 riders still together as the final two laps were signalled.
James attacked into these final two laps to a 50m gap. Nathan Crump chased hard in an attempt to overhaul the lead but finished three lengths back for second.
Gavin Nethery crossed the line in third position ahead of Godfrey Green, Andrew McKensey, Curtis Trkulja, Adam Rourke and Steve Gendek and a strung out chase group.
C grade provided another win for the visiting Illawarra Cycle Club when Brendan Sears held Brad Oaten to a half-wheel margin on the finish line.
A constant fast pace throughout saw two riders drop away but there were still ten there for the final lap. Sears and Oaten were into the finish straight at the head of the field and raced ahead to the line.
Adrian McMillan was in third position at five lengths and ahead of Matt O’Hearn and then Anthony Field (Goulburn CC) crossed the line in fifth place ahead of Jose Pereira and Gary Bryce.
The D grade field was intact for this race finish but some hard chasing was required to bring back solo breakaway rider Mathew Grootenboer at middle distance.
Grootenboer was having his first start in a road race after previously racing off road on mountain bikes. Steve Daley was back in the field after three years away from competition due to injuries and Liam Wallis was having his first race start.
Into the finish straight it looked like a win for the former mountain bike racer until Bruce Jenkins flashed past him on the line for a half-length win. Alice Lauder showed her speed to take third ahead of Hubert Driehuis, Daley, Mark Robbins and Wallis.
Nowra Velo Club graded criteriums continue on the Tech Park next weekend with the program getting under way at 8.30am on Sunday.
