Judges David Morris, Deb Pearce, Nick O’Leary and associate judge Simon Hall sipped and scored a range of wines at the Mollymook Golf Club on Thursday, January 17.
The South Coast Wine Show has been held by a committee of the Milton Show Society for nearly 20 years and chairman for most of those years has been Mr Morris.
Mr Morris was rapt to return for 2019, joined by a “cross-field” of expertise in the judging arena.
“Each judge does their own pointing, comes up with their marks. We move to the tasting table and if there’s any reviewing for golds or silvers, we’ll go to the tasting bench and have a quick look,” he said.
Mr Morris lauded the quality on offer, particularly the white varieties.
“So far we’ve seen some absolutely stunning wines, we’ve given a high percentage of medals,” he said.
“The whites, they’re always probably the strength of the area. There’s some good reds, but whites in particular absolutely shine from this region.”
Semillon was the strongest of the white wine, Mr Morris said.
He encouraged wine-buyers to purchase the 2018 vintage.
“The wines from the ‘18 vintage were very strong. While there is vintages from 10 years ago on-wards, the last year or two and the ‘18 vintage in particular seems pretty strong,” he said.
“I’d be snapping them up.”
South Coast Wine Show coordinator John Payne was pleased to see some new entries.
“It’s about winemakers saying ‘here’s my best, tell me what you think’,” he said.
Mr Payne praised the golf club for offering its space.
A public wine tasting will be held at the Mollymook Golf Club on Friday, January 18 from 6pm to 7.30pm.
