On Tuesday morning, Shoalhaven City Council named Mr Wilkins as this year’s Shoalhaven Australia Day Ambassador as the region gears up to celebrate the annual event.
Shoalhaven Mayor Amanda Findley is excited that ‘Wilko’ will take part in the ceremony that combines Shoalhaven Australia Day Awards, Shoalhaven Medal, The Shoalhaven Sporting Hall of Fame and Australia Citizenship ceremony.
“Peter Wilkins is a remarkable Australian and Shoalhaven resident,” Mayor Findley said.
“He’s an ABC Grandstand presenter and has worked with the national broadcaster for the last 37 years as a sports commentator.
“This year’s Shoalhaven Australia Day Awards also includes the Shoalhaven Sporting Hall of Fame, so it is very fitting the ceremony will involve one of Australia’s great sporting journalists.
“The awards provide an opportunity for the community to acknowledge volunteers and people who contribute to the wellbeing, development and social welfare of the Shoalhaven. The ceremony will also officially recognise 33 Shoalhaven residents choosing to become Australian citizens and is incredibly moving for friends and families of those participants.”
The Shoalhaven City Council 2019 Australia Day Awards, Sporting Hall of Fame Awards and Citizenship Ceremony will start at 5.30pm at Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre.
