A Sydney man has successfully appealed the severity of a two-year jail term, getting his sentence reduced to 12-months.

Garry William McIntosh, 37, of Birrong near Canterbury, had pleaded guilty to possessing a shortened firearm (not a pistol), possessing a prohibited weapon without a permit, possessing ammunition without holding a licence, stealing property from a dwelling, having goods in custody suspected of being stolen and receiving or disposing of stolen property in Nowra Local Court in October.
Court papers said McIntosh had been found with a shortened firearm in Bomaderry on June 29 as well as a number of pieces of jewellery including antique coins,10 gold rings, two gold bracelets and other jewellery police say was stolen from Prestons in Sydney on June 26.
Police said he was in possession of a police identification badge and that he disposed of other jewellery items in Hamilton on June 27.
Magistrate Gabriel Fleming sentenced McIntosh to and aggregate sentence of two years from June 30 this year with a non-parole period of 15 months.
McIntosh appealed the severity of the sentence in Nowra District Court with Judge Phillip Mahony upholding the appeal and reducing his sentence to 12 months’ jail with a non-parole period of five months.
