Since the bulk container deposit centre opened at South Nowra in January, the community has helped to divert a significant amount of recyclable waste from landfill while supporting those in need at the same time.
Vinnies executive director for central councils and commercial operations Peter Knock said the container deposit scheme was an extension of the retail store philosophy of ‘reuse’.
“To reach the 10,000,000 container milestone within a year of our participation in the scheme through over-the-counter and bulk sites is really promising, and we hope that the community will continue to embrace our bulk deposit centres as convenient options for processing their eligible containers,” he said.
“By simply using the facilities, customers are helping to raise important funds so that Vinnies can keep providing a hand up to those experiencing disadvantage and homelessness in our communities, and we’re encouraged by the growing number of refund donations that further enhance our ability to provide help where it’s needed most.”
The facilities offer on-the-spot refunds, and visitors can also choose to donate some or all of their refund to Vinnies to help support vital services, with tax deductible receipts issued for donations of more than $2.
