The current world number five opened his account at stop number two of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, with a strong performance in heat five of round three.
The Culburra Beach Boardrider finished second in the heat, with a 7.76 – just behind countrymen Jack Freestone, who finished first with a 11.67.
Wright’s score, which saw him finish ahead of Brazil’s Deivid Silva and South Africa’s Michael February – has seen him move into round four, where he is matched up against Costa Rica’s Carlos Munoz, Peru’s Alonso Correa and South Africa’s Matthew McGillvray.
