Research from The Salvation Army shows that 95 per cent of all households who access the group’s emergency services are living in poverty, with 74 per cent experiencing food insecurity and 67 per cent reporting that food affordability is their greatest daily challenge.
This challenge, when Christmas approaches, is greater and more stressful.
Shoalhaven Salvation Army officer, Captain Matthew Sutcliffe, says Christmas is one of the hardest times of year for local people who are doing it tough.
However, he said for a small contribution people can make a big difference in helping to give hope where it’s needed most.
“For just $29 you can provide food on the table and a present under the Christmas tree to help give hope to someone in need this Christmas,” Captain Sutcliffe said.
“At Christmas, the Salvos will serve over 100,000 meals, distribute more than 500,000 gifts and toys and support more than 70,000 families in need.
“However, we can only do this with the support of the Australian public.”
The Salvation Army is also encouraging Shoalhaven residents to connect with their community - whether it is through participating in Christmas activities, giving a hand up to someone in need or reaching out to the Salvos for help.
If you require assistance at Christmas with food and gifts please call 4423 2102.
Christmas is the busiest time of year for the Salvos.
Not only is The Salvation Army in Shoalhaven running its annual Christmas Cheer operation, to provide toys and food for those in need, but is holding other special community Christmas events.
The Salvation Army, on Christmas Day, is inviting the public to gather to celebrate the hope and joy of Christmas.
The Christmas Day service will be held at The Salvation Army Church Hall, Corner of Salisbury Drive and St Anns Street, East Nowra, at 9am and everyone is welcome to attend.
Shoalhaven residents are also invited to attend The Salvation Army’s special Jingle Jam Family carols and community night at The Salvation Army Church Complex, East Nowra, Sunday, December 9 from 4pm.
“Whether you are by yourself, or with friends and family, Christmas is a time that is best spent together,” Captain Sutcliffe
“So join us, so we can share the true spirit of Christmas,” Captain Sutcliffe says.
