Team Shoalhaven, a Trek4Kidz supporter,  just collected the latest donation of quilts from the St Georges Basin Have a Chat group and this crafty group of people loves to hear where their donations go.

Team Shoalhaven member, Terese Macey-Markham, told the group about the sick boy who wanted to give the flowery quilt to his mother because she loves flowers.

“They are the strongest kids you would ever meet,” Terese said about the children they support.

The quilts, during the Trek4Kidz rally, get delivered to places like Wauchope, the John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle, while many are taken to the Starlight Express Room in Sydney.

Many quilts are also taken to the Nowra Community Hospital for local children and Ronald McDonald House also gets a share.

Terese said the feeling they got from donating the quilts was almost indescribable.

“It’s surprising how emotional it’s,” she said.

Betty Bourke from the Have a Chat group said they were happy that their efforts could help so many children.

The group has been making and donating their impressive quilts for over 10-years.

Not all the quilts are donated and some are kept for fundraisers.

This year Team Shoalhaven raised $28,725 which contributed to Trek4Kidz’s $180,000 2018 tally and overall the group has raised $2.2 million.

Trek4Kidz was started in 1997 by a small band of like-minded people from Tuross Head on the far south coast of NSW, who decided to organise an event that would not only help change the lives of seriously ill children, but would provide a social event for people who share the drive and ambition for charity work and a keen interest in exploring the great Australian countryside and meeting the many characters our country boasts.

The organisation is unique, in that 100 percent of funds that are raised go directly to the Starlight Children’s Foundation.  Most other treks take some money from the donations to cover administration costs.  In this case, each trekker pays an amount of money each year, which not only covers the costs of accommodation and meals for the week we are away but also covers those few administration costs.

Trek4Kidz is an annual week-long event where a group explores different regional areas of the Australian countryside by car. Since its inception, the Trek has visited more than 450 towns, 50 schools and raised over $2,019,000 for the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

These funds would enable Starlight to grant hundreds of life-changing wishes or transform the hospital experience for thousands of sick children at hospitals around Australia.
