Mr and Mrs Salway will celebrate their wedding anniversary on Thursday, November 15 and it all can be traced back to a faulty motorcycle.
Jan was out motorbike riding with a friend, a boy, and they broke down in Huskisson.
Her friend lived with Don’s family and he called Mr Salway to come and fix the bike.
“And the rest is history,” Jan said.
The Bomaderry couple had an immediate attraction and some would say it was love at first sight.
“He was, and is, a very nice and kind person,” Jan said.
They had never met before and then fate intervened. Don was quite taken with Jan and thought she was a nice girl. They started to date and Don even taught Jan how to drive a car.
Jan lived in Kangaroo Valley and Don lived in the Coolangatta area.
It was a quick romance and they both knew they were always going to get married, which they did in the Church of the Good Shepherd in Kangaroo Valley on November 15, 1958.
Before the big day they went to Wollongong to buy the ring which Jan still wears today. When it comes to maintaining a successful marriage they have a simple formula.
“There is a lot of give and take and we share common interests,” Jan said.
They play tennis and enjoy a game of indoor bowls together, along with a strong interest in lawn bowls, which is another of Jan’s great loves.
The couple raised three daughters Christine, Rosemarie and Catherine and they now have five grandchildren.
When asked about maintaining a successful marriage they both went back to the give and take theme.
“We don’t always agree but we always work through it and here we are today,” Jan said.
They also travelled a lot around Australia together with their mates and every Sunday they go for a drive and have lunch.
