Almost 12 months after conceding in a gripping playoff to Cameron Smith at the Australian Open on the Gold Coast, Zunic revelled in the Queensland conditions again at the Brisbane Golf Club.
Zunic reeled off six birdies on Thursday, but dropped two bogies, to be two behind leader Zac Murray, the Victorian amateur, at -6.
Fellow South Coast golfer Travis Smyth also has his eyes on weekend action, after starting the tournament with a one-under round of 70.
In a chaotic round, Smyth has three birdies and three bogies on the front nine, but still finished in front.
Smyth had missed out on qualifying for the lucrative US second-tier web.com tour last month.
Zunic will head to Spain next week for the final stage of European qualifying, in a bid to book his ticket next season.
