On October 16, people attempting to listen to council’s Strategy and Assets committee meeting and extra ordinary meeting online were straining to hear councillors and deputees due to poor audio quality.

During the meeting, when council staff became aware of the severity of audio problems, councillors were advised against standing up while speaking.

A number of Shoalhaven Councillors have long advocated for a webcasting system to improve transparency and public access to meetings, and though Cr Patricia White pushed for the online broadcast of meetings, she has aired concerns about system’s implementation. She told the South Coast Register about a webcast glitch in August, where the local broadcast cut to a random council meeting which was being held in Geelong, Victoria.

Cr Bob Proudfoot said many residents, ratepayers and people with a financial interest in the city’s operations were happy the webcast was up and running.

“I’ve received many pats on the back from people who watch it,” Cr Proudfoot said.

“It sounds like there have been some teething problems. Our staff will do their utmost to ensure it does work well. We have to make sure that a) it works properly and b) the wider community knows it’s there for them. A lot of people don’t know you can just head to the council website and watch it.

“I know quite a few consultants watch it. Some of those people didn't realise just how political some of these decisions we make are. Many are simply horrified.

“It’s good though that they can watch our meetings. They may not live here but they’re part of the business community of the city. We try to attract investment to our city, which generates employment and jobs for our young people.”

Setup costs included webcasting equipment and works to the chamber, such as enhancements to wiring and cabling.

The webcast provider, Interstream Pty Ltd, also provides webcasting services for Eurobodalla, Kiama, Shellharbour and Wollongong councils.

The next ordinary council meeting will be broadcast via webcast.shoalhaven.nsw.gov.au from 5pm on Tuesday, October 30.
