Admittedly In our job we do meet some incredible people who have done amazing things.
The Shoalhaven Branch of the Order of Australia Association annual get-together at the Nowra Golf Club on Wednesday was one such occasion.
To have so many honour recipients, all from the Shoalhaven, together at the one time was incredible.
From historians, sports representatives, volunteers administrators, politicians, artists, arts supporters, musicians, military personnel, community workers, education, through to work in agriculture and in particular the Royal Agricultural Society, the guests and recipients came from a wide cross-section on the Shoalhaven.
OAM, AMs were all proudly on show. But it was also a humbling function.
It made one so proud of the calibre of people we have in the Shoalhaven. Those willing to go above and beyond. Go out of their way to get things done. All are rightly proud of being honoured.
And they are humble about their achievements. They often don’t see they have done anything special – they have just done what they say was expected.
For many it has been years and years of volunteer work or associations with groups or clubs. Quite often it is more than one group.
Or excellence in their careers has been acknowledged. Former Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Tim Barrett AM (right) was guest speaker and what a story he has to tell – growing up locally, a proud Shoalhaven product who rose through the ranks to the top job in the navy.
It is often said if you want something done give it to a busy person. They will make it happen.
This is certainly the case in many of those present on Wednesday; many are involved in numerous organisations.
It made me even more proud to be from the Shoalhaven and proud of what our residents do. There are so many out there who continue to do such things day in day out.
They just go about their daily activities - they volunteer at the sports club, at the school, at community groups. That one person who is always there - always willing to help out, always willing to lend a hand.
I’m for one am proud to be from the Shoalhaven.
