Action needed now
In response to Cr Kitchener’s comments in the SCR on September 26, I am pleased to read his first sentence acknowledges the need to “manage responsibly the earth systems … and to create socially and environmentally desirable outcomes”. Good on you Cr Kitchener, you are more concerned about these things than I may have previously thought. Regarding his comments about the “ever increasing number of community members taking action to combat climate change”.

Yes this is true, but sadly the people making significant changes in their lifestyles are not in the majority. A lot more needs to be done and it needs to come from the top down. It is all very well to resolve current issues, however, this does not mean we abrogate our responsibilities to plan for the future. In fact it is imperative we take action on climate change now otherwise there will be no future for our children and grandchildren.
We need to treat the cause of climate change. The droughts are going to go for longer and become more severe, the floods more frequent, the catastrophic storms and bushfires will all increase in intensity and frequency. If taking action now means there is a further expense to building or living costs, that is the price we pay for trying to limit the effects of climate change.
I find it laughable that Cr Kitchener, who is on the Shoalhaven Independents team,, says “one would expect council to live within its means”.
Yes he is right, council does need to live within its means, yet he is on the team that is constantly bringing expensive proposals to council.

Well done, Turf Club
Shoalhaven City Turf Club was recently named the winner of the Outstanding Award at the Racing NSW Country and Provincial Awards.
This fantastic outcome for our local racing venue was the result of a lot of hard work and passion from all the Turf Club team led by CEO Lynn Locke, and the Turf Club’s Board of Directors led by Chairman Michael Martin.
Congratulations and well done, the award is very much deserved!
The club is now looking a little more refreshed and has increased its capacity and provided improved disability access. The benefits will be felt not just at the club but across the region, boosting visitation and employment opportunities.

Councillors should behave
It has become very obvious over the past few months there is a concerted campaign to undermine the mayor and any actions being undertaken by the minor groups on council. Council meetings have deteriorated into ugly slanging matches and unprofessional behaviour by a group of individuals who clearly are more interested in self-aggrandisement and dog whistling than actually achieving anything positive for the people of the city.
Offensive behaviour, insults and bullying have become the hallmarks of this group. It seems these people can’t get their heads around the fact the community participated ina democratic election and that councillors have an obligation to do their job in the best interests of the city, not their egos.
The tactic of using constant rescission motions to stall and inhibit council operations would appear to be a deliberate attempt to create the appearance that nothing is being achieved and therefore the current leadership looks ineffective.
I find the actions and behaviour of this nasty little group appalling and unethical. If these councillors are such poor representatives why isn’t the Department of Local Government stepping in?
For a council that claims to be non-partisan the actions of Team Gash the Shoalhaven Independents is very partisan indeed.
