The issue first came to light in August, when a residents voiced concerns over the consistent dumping of building materials, burnt-out cars and general litter. 

At the time, Shoalhaven City Council said a lot of the littered materials had blown into the reserve from nearby work sites. The spokesperson said council had informed nearby work sites to secure their materials to prevent the issue from continuing. 

But flash forward a month, and the reserve is still strewn with building materials.

Resident Richard O’neill said he was fed-up with the amount of rubbish still in the reserve. 

“Pretty much all of the rubbish is wind blown from the new housing estate, adjacent to the western walking fire trail,” he said. 

“Not only is the said rubbish an eyesore, it could be deemed a hazard should there be a fire.” 

National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is in charge of the reserve, which a spokesperson said was “vulnerable to rubbish”. 

“Worrigee Nature Reserve, which sits on the edge of the suburbs, can be vulnerable to rubbish dumping, including burnt-out cars. Wind-blown rubbish from a number of nearby subdivisions also contributes,” they said. 

“NPWS staff are working to clean up the waste.”

NPWS it was continuing to work with building sites and companies to try and stop the issue. 

“Companies building houses have been engaged to secure building waste on sites,” the spokesperson said. 

“Over the past few years, with their assistance, a significant proportion of the northern portion of the reserve has been fenced, reducing the occurrence of rubbish.”

Despite this, residents want the dumping stopped sooner rather than later, and have suggested security cameras to try and combat the issue.
