Andrew James Wellington, 35, pleaded guilty to having custody of a knife in public and obscene exposure and not guilty to behaving in an offensive manner and a further charge of wielding a knife in public.

Responding to reports of a man being in the Nowra CBD with a knife on November 11 last year, court papers said police found Wellington and another man at the intersection of Kinghorne and Junction streets.

The other man told police he had taken a 30 centimetre serrated edge bread knife off Wellington because “he got a bit crazy”.

Wellington told police he had the knife for “protection”.

Wellington pleaded not guilty to behaving in an offensive manner and wielding a knife in public at the Shoalhaven District Hospital following an incident around 5.50am on November 18.

The court heard he was abusive towards staff in the emergency department and banged on the outside windows before leaving. All the time he was carrying a silver butter knife.

Court papers also stated around 10am on September 3 this year Wellington exposed himself to two women sitting in a car outside Nowra Public School on Osborne Street.

The court heard Wellington looked in the car where the two women were sitting, before walking towards Douglas Street. He continued to turn and look back at the car.

The women told police he turned around, pulled his penis out, and swung it around in clear view.

At the time he was on bail with the condition he not enter the Nowra CBD unless it was for a medical appointment.

The court heard Wellington has a history of mental health issues.

Magistrate Susan McGowan sentenced Wellington to one month jail from September 17 and placed him on a 12-month good behaviour bond. While he was convicted over the “flashing” it will not be recorded on his criminal record.
