The 23-year-old played a key role in helping his Moorebank/Liverpool District Hockey Club defeat UNSW 5-2 on Saturday, before backing it up on Sunday with his University of Wollongong side – where they defeated Albion Park 5-2.

“The wins were unbelievable – we played sensationally in both games and it was just very special to think that I got another opportunity to win two titles with a lot of guys that I would consider my best mates,” Jennings said.

“The ‘double’ is special because it’s not something that I may be able to do in the future, with the Illawarra competition potentially restructuring.”

This weekend marked the third time Jennings had won a premiership with Moorebank, while he has seven Wollongong hockey titles to his name.

But after quick celebrations with those two sides, which both contain Nowra brothers Alex and Callum Mackay, Jennings is finally preparing to test his stick skills abroad.

The former Bomaderry High School student will join up with Leonidas Hockey Club, a Dutch hockey side based in Rotterdam, that competes in the Overgangsklasse – the third tier of Dutch hockey.

“Playing in the Netherlands came about with the help from my good mate Kurt Ogilvie [who was also part of the grand final winning Moorebank side],” Jennings said.

“We just sent an email to a few clubs to see if there was interest and luckily for me there was.

“After I sent some film of me playing, the club [Leonidas HC] became more and more interested and now I am headed to live their for nine months.”

This journey has been on Jennings’ radar for a number of years now and he is excited that it is finally happening.

“This has definitely has been a goal of mine for a while and now it’s here, I’m fairly nervous and scared as I am the club’s first international player,” he said.

“My expectations right now of my trip are a bit unclear, but I expect the hockey to be pretty crazy.

“The club I am joining has a bar and restaurant, as well a huge club house and eight hockey fields in one complex.

“So straight away I am expecting it to be ridiculous in terms of people watching our games and after seeing some game highlights the coach sent me [of their first two games], it definitely appears to be quiet hectic.”

During his nine-month stint, Jennings has set himself a number of goals.

“I am hoping to gain different approaches to the game of hockey, as the Dutch play the game fairly different to Australia,” he said.

“If I can also help Leonidas gain promotion to the Promotion Klass, it would be unreal, but for now just to play as best I can.”
