The 23 students from Years 4, 5 and 6 have been practicing their routine for several weeks now, which is a dark rendition of Alice in Wonderland, and her quest to become queen.
The dance was choreographed by both the students and teacher, Alyce Penfold.
“This piece wasn’t just me, the girls and I worked so hard together and I think that’s what makes this dance so special,” she said.
“We always bounced ideas off each other and the girls were very supportive of one another.”
Year 4 student Grace, who dances as Alice, said the routine had brought the girls together.
“My favourite part was definitely being able to work with a team of such positive, kind and talented girls,” she said.
“Even if we didn’t know each other at the start of the year, now we always find a way to cheer each other up.”
The NSW State Dance will showcase the work of more than 1500 students from Kindergarten to Year 12.
The performances are underpinned by technical training, stamina, creativity, confidence, cooperation and respect for one another fostered by their dedicated and talented teachers.
While the girls said they were excited to perform, they were all feeling a little nervous.
“I think we are all a bit nervous but everyone is so positive,”Year 6 student Milla said.
“The teamwork has been great and I’ve made so many new firends.”
This is the third time in the past four years that Illaroo Road Public School has made it to the state level dance festival.
