If you are taking advantage of the Return and Earn scheme to pocket some extra cash for eligible containers, but haven’t visited the Vinnies Bulk Container Deposit Centre in South Nowra yet – now is the time.
Located at 11/158 Princes Highway, South Nowra (opposite Bunnings), the facility offers drive-up access, fast processing without the need to pre-sort, no minimum quantity, plus on-the-spot cash refunds.
Since opening in December 2017, in line with the NSW government’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS), the South Nowra facility has processed almost 1.9 million containers, equating to approximately 7300 cubic metres of waste diverted from landfill – that’s equal to around 80 semi-trailer loads.
The St Vincent de Paul Society NSW (Vinnies) has become a collection partner in the Container Deposit Scheme, providing more than a dozen over-the-counter collection points in Vinnies shops throughout Western Sydney, the Illawarra and Shoalhaven, as well as bulk handling sites in Unanderra and South Nowra.
These are soon to be complemented by an expanding network of bulk container deposit facilities managed by Vinnies across the state.
Participation in the scheme expands on the Vinnies’ ethos and ongoing commitment to recycling, and is an extension of the its retail store philosophy of reuse – helping to divert waste from landfill and supporting those in need at the same time.
The program also provides Vinnies with an additional revenue stream to help fund its good works within communities across NSW.
Vinnies NSW Container Deposit Scheme project lead, Peter Quarmby, said participation in the scheme provided another opportunity to put the society’s commitment to sustainability into action.
“Our involvement has social, environmental and economic benefits, with all funds raised being redirected into the provision of highly-valued Vinnies services in local communities, including the Vinnies Van and Jim da Silva Farm in Nowra,” he said.
“As well as providing a convenient option to members of the general public for processing their eligible containers, local businesses, schools, clubs and other organisations can also benefit by working in partnership with Vinnies, utilising our established logistics network and provision of required infrastructure to facilitate their own participation in the Container Deposit Scheme,” he added.
Vinnies’ participation in the NSW Container Deposit Scheme was recently recognised with the Social Responsibility Champion accolade at the 2018 National Retail Awards.
