The International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend aims to raise the profile of lighthouses, light vessels and other navigational aids by promoting lighthouses and associated maritime heritage.
In NSW, Lighthouses of Australia will be operating two retired lighthouses, Point Perpendicular at the entrance to Jervis Bay and the light at Wollongong Breakwater.
The Point Perpendicular Lighthouse can be viewed from the grounds, which will be open to the public from 6am until 8.30pm.
Weather permitting guided tours of the lighthouse will be conducted between 10.30am and 4.30pm. There will be no tours after 4.30pm or in the event of adverse weather.
Wollongong Breakwater lighthouse can be viewed from the Belmore Basin foreshore and will operate from dusk until dawn each night.
The lighthouse is not open for tours.
The lighting of the two lighthouses will allow the public an opportunity to view and experience working heritage in the hope it will prompt people to think about the importance of maintaining these valuable pieces of our maritime heritage before they are lost.
