“You just have to set up the situation straight away and decide what you need to do,” West Nowra RFS deputy captain Terry Burke said.
“The fire was burning on a fairly wide front, travelling in an easterly direction.”
It has been nearly 10 years since he has fought a fire fanned by winds that strong.
As firefighters contained the North Nowra blaze, the Kingiman fire raged on Thursday, but Mr Burke said his crew will likely stay put.
“We can’t take all the resources out of the northern Shoalhaven in case something happens up here like it did yesterday,” he said.
“We even had a strike team from the Southern Highlands tasked to go to Milton redirected to assist us.”
