Coach Paul reports: “Creative play saw Connor MacQueen score with an intelligent, well timed pass inside the first 20 minutes.
“Not long after that, Dane McGinn had a one-on-one with the keeper with the ball ricocheting off towards Connor, who swivelled to volley the ball for his second of the match, but his left knee buckled under him and he could not finish the shot.
“Ben Cubbo and young Zac Stahlhut had very good games as central defenders in a good team effort.”
Reserve Grade had a 0-2 loss against Heads.
Coach Martin reports: “Once again, we were down on troops and once again our over 35’s were called into action to help out the youngsters. It was a very even first half with Heads scoring 2 goals before the break – unfortunately one was very controversial.
“The mood in the shed was positive at halftime and we came out and dominated the second half. We were basically camped in their half – but once again we were unable to find the back of the net.”
Basin Third Grade Men suffered a 1-3 loss to Heads whilst the Over 35s couldn’t hold out Illaroo, going down 2-3. This ends the men’s finals hopes.
First and Reserve grade ladies travelled to Shoalhaven Heads this week. First grade won 3-2 whilst reserve grade secured a 3-1 win. Both teams have secured places in the finals.
Third grade ladies were unable to overcome Culburra, losing 1-3. It will come down to their final game against Gerringong to determine whether they join their first division counterparts in the finals.
In junior competition this week, Basin U13 boys B grade had a 1-4 loss against Huskisson, putting an end to their finals hopes. With a bye scheduled for their last game of the season, the boys now hang up their boots, disappointed with missing the finals, but excited about the promise their team shows.
U13 boys A grade were defeated 0-2 by competition champions Bomaderry. The boys take on United this coming Saturday but are comfortably sitting in the top 4 and as such are looking forward to the finals series.
U13 girls put up a valiant fight against Milton White holding them out 1-1 at half time with a beautiful goal from Olivia Smeets. Their 1-3 loss was more a reflection of fatigue setting in with hot conditions and limited subs.
Basin U15 Boys A grade’s 1-1 draw against United Bears and 1-4 loss to Illaroo means they now sit 5th on the ladder, equal points with United Bears. Basin will need to win or draw against United Grizzlies next week and hope that United Bears lose in order for them to make finals.
Basin U15 Girls had a convincing 1-7 win over Illaroo on Saturday. The girls have 4 games remaining (including a bye) and currently sit in 4th position on the ladder.
