From 8am families began to arrive at Jervis Bay Stock Feeds, Falls Creek, where an array of country-themed activities were set up for the event.
A petting zoo, dog wash, pony rides, an equine dentist, jumping castle, face-painting stalls, sausage sizzles kept attendees occupied through the unusually warm, winter’s day while donations continually poured in.
Local celebrity Charlie the Brahman was another draw card of the event.
Nowra to Dubbo Drought Relief Drive organiser Leeanne Oldfield said it was “quite an eventful day” and she was amazed by the Shoalhaven community’s support.
“We’ve had hay donations, we’ve received cheques from individuals in the community,” she said.
On August 27, Ms Oldfield, her husband and her son will set out for Dubbo where she will then distribute stock to farmers in need.
“When we drive into Dubbo I hope to do a live feed and then they can see how big this has got,” Ms Oldfield said.
Ms Oldfield praised the local sponsors who made the family fun day “bigger than expected”. However, she also encouraged more donations as she hopes to reach her target in a fortnight’s time.
Business owner and family fun day host Kim Treyvaud said they were inundated by donations from people “who you would not expect”.
The generosity of Shoalhaven residents was overwhelming, she said.
“The Aussie spirit is at 150 per cent,” she said.
“Everybody has helped steer the message, the whole community is pulling together for these farmers.”
