He has submitted a Notice of Motion to be debated at Shoalhaven Council’s next ordinary meeting, which he believes will “support the plight of our farmers and those who make their living off the rich farming and grazing land throughout the city”.
It comes off the back of Kiama MP Gareth Ward’s call for local councils to provide struggling farmers with a ‘rate holiday’.
Cr Pakes would like to see council provide drought affected farmers with a ‘rate holiday’ for owners of agricultural land and promote the assistance provided by the NSW government’s recently announced $1 billion support package.
“We all know of the difficulties being faced by our local farmers,” Cr Pakes said.
“Our fields may look a little greener that those west of the ranges, but the reality is drought is biting here as much as anywhere else around Australia.”
Cr Pakes said he wanted to see the agriculture sector in the Shoalhaven thrive.
“I want to respond positively to the lead the NSW government has given us with the release of their drought assistance package this week that kicks the can to the tune of $1 billion,” he said.
“Our community is looking for leadership for all levels of government.
“Its time Shoalhaven City Council stepped up, that’s why I will move the following motion and call for the support of my colleagues.”
The next ordinary meeting of council will be held on August 28 at 5pm, at the Shoalhaven Council Chambers.
