THE women finally hit the water at the 2018 Vans US Open of Surfing on Friday, as event seven on the World Surf League Championships Tour got underway at Huntington Beach.

Of particular interest in the women’s competition was Gerroa’s Sally Fitzgibbons, who has progressed to round three.
Fitzgibbons opened the competition in heat six of round one, which saw her finish third in her heat against United States’ Caroline Marks (12.40) and Australia’s Bronte Macaulay (9.87), only managing a combined two-wave score of 9.30.
As such, Fitzgibbons, the current world number eight, then took on Macaulay in a sudden death round two heat, which she won 12.84 to 4.90.
The Gerroa product will now face off with US’ Lakey Peterson and Hawaii’s Coco Ho in round three when surfing resumes at Huntington Beach.
