The former Ulladulla High School student played a key role in helping the Hockeyroos win their World Cup opener against Japan (3-2) and draw against Belgium (nil-all) in game two, before the injury occurred early in the team’s 1-all draw with New Zealand.
“Everyone’s athletic career will have injuries, minor or major, littered throughout,” Commerford said.
“What I have learnt is that every situation will have a silver lining.
“While the timing and consequence of this injury is hard, I’m sure I will gain something positive from this.
“For now, I am looking forward to support the girls all the way to the gold medal.”
Midfielder Commerford will be replaced in the 18-member team by Cabarita Beach forward Savannah Fitzpatrick, who has been with the team in London on standby.
The Hockeyroos, which also features Gerringong’s Greace Stewart, will next face Argentina in the quarter-final, on 5.15am Thursday (AEST).
