A stalwart of the South Coast community for many decades, Mr Melonas was best known for bringing the Huskisson Carnival to the South Coast every year.
His family announced his passing on the Joyland Amusements Facebook early Wednesday afternoon (July 11).
“It is with much sadness, tears and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joylands' matriarch, George Melonas this morning,” the post said.
“George established the business back in 1958 and is still run by George's family to this day. The Joylands' family and staff honour his memory.
“RIP George and enjoy that carnival in the sky.”
Tributes are already flowing, with South Coast MP Shelley Hancock saying Mr Melonas was “a compassionate and generous member of the community”.
“His family should be proud of the lasting contributions he made over his lifetime,” Mrs Hancock said.
“George created a successful, family-run, amusement business in 1958, which is still in operation today.
“Over the years George used his company to give back to the community often dedicating his time and carnival equipment to raise funds for important local causes.
“A long-time member of the Jervis Bay Lions Club, each year George would donate a day’s proceeds from the iconic Huskisson Carnival to causes such as childhood cancer research, the linear accelerator appeal and families affected by the Queensland and Victorian floods.
“My thoughts and prayers are with his children, grandchildren and wife Joy at this sad time.
“An amazing man who will surely be missed.”
