In a final act of defiance, 25-year-old Talal Alameddine refused to stand in the dock of the NSW Supreme Court on Friday as his sentence was handed down.
Justice Peter Johnson said he was an Islamic State sympathiser who displayed a "callous disregard" for public safety.
He handed Alameddine a sentence of 17 years and eight months in jail with a non-parole period of 13-and-a-half years.
Outside court, Mr Cheng's relatives said the sentence reflected a clear link between Alameddine's actions and the "tragic loss of a very dear man, father and husband".
Alameddine, who has a criminal history and displayed no remorse, received a 15 per cent sentence discount for his guilty plea.
